I did not expect this one to hit so hard. Many newcomers might expect Akira to be a sci-fi racing film and I was one of those people. The iconic shot of Mitsuru walking to his motorcycle is one of this films many cool moments, and perhaps the easiest one to sell in the west. It's a cool fucking poster. I'm jealous of those who got to see this film when it first opened in the US. Being one of the first animated movies that wasn't for the whole family. It's no surprise it didn't initially do that well here, but imagine having your eyes opened to anime, in theaters, to Akira in 1988... It was a generational defining moment. Watching it for the first time in 2025 and it still blew me away. For two days now I've been thinking about it. During my workout after the movie I listened to the soundtrack. It's so badass. Apparently it's called Gamelan and it's Indonesian orchestra music but all I know it that it was fucking awesome. The backdrop of Akira is a dark and gritty cyberpunk world. In fact, it seems author Katsuhiro Otomo damn near invented the genre. The aesthetics' reach can still be seen in the recent game and anime based on Cyberpunk 2077. So what is this movie actually about? To be honest I really don't want to ruin it for you. It's so much fun to discover. And who knows? Akira is exactly the type of movie I would do a video essay about.
