![]() Jenna Ortega is not having a great year so far. Death of a Unicorn was terrible, but this is even worse. This one I didn't even manage to finish before leaving the theater in frustration. Perhaps it's worse because I actually expected this one to be good. I've been a fan of Trey Edward Shults. Both "Waves" and "It Comes at Night" left a lasting impression on me and I was really excited to see his name attached to this project. However, I've never been a huge fan of The Weeknd's music. So I was definitely in the smaller minority group of people coming to see this film for the director. Initially I was on board with the film's experience. It's meant to be challenging, anxious, and make you uncomfortable. Unfortunately, that's really all it ever manages to do. An hour in I was praying it was almost over and when I realized it wasn't I almost jumped out of my seat, but instead I waited a little longer. I was hoping there would be something to latch onto but this film has no character - or characters (outside of our one lead who the film is all about). With over 30 minutes of runtime left I decided to leave. I didn't care what terrible things Ortega's character would do to Abel, because as far as I'm concerned the asshole deserves it.
