There's not been any movie in recent memory that's hit me so hard in it's final moments as Aftersun did. Balling my eyes out as the credits rolled I sought refuge in reddit threads shared by others who went through this same experience. Charlotte Wells directorial debut is an emotional powerhouse about a young father and his teenage daughter going on a summer vacation together. Loosely based off of her own childhood. That's all you should know going into this film and I will hesitate from saying more. It's clear that Wells has an acute understanding of the modern human condition and she is out here looking to rid you of your tissue boxes. This film touched my soul and that's very much thanks to leading actor Paul Mescal's heart wrenching performance as Calum. Just as in real life a lot of the emotional moments in this film are subtle and seem insignificant, but in the rear view mirror of life they speak volumes.
