Don't Look Up (2021)

Adam Mckay made another comedy to watch while you're stoned. Not a stoner-flick because that would insinuate that its about potheads. No, it just has one pot head in it. You just won't really want to watch this film sober. I happen to be kind a stoned right now and don't really want to write about this film, which is sad. I was really looking forward to taking a break from anime to watch a highly anticipated film that would then launch me into another insightful binge of films. Nope. We got a 150 minute film that doesn't take itself seriously at all. It's got serious talent behind it, seriously big names starring, and it's about a really serious matter that will end the world - but it manages to do very little and in result makes you feel nothing beyond a few laughs.

Mainstream (2021)

There is not many good things to say about this misguided film so let me start with this. Andrew Garfield's performance may be the best thing about this experience. Maybe, too bad his character is as shallow as he is underdeveloped. I don't think there was one likeable character in this somehow overly long movie. Nat Wolff's Jake possibly the only nice person but we don't really know enough about him to pass a judgement. We know he's a pushover! Most aggravating is Maya Hawke's uselessness. This film could have erased her character and the same message would have got across; INTERNET = BAD. Her character is supposed to be an artist who's aspiring to greatness and after crossing this enigmatic cutie (Garfield), decides his mindless ranting will take center stage of her YouTube channel. The online world this film presents is dominated by YouTube and major players Tic Tok and Twitch don't make one appearance. Considering this film was made in 2019 and not released until today, it's commentary already feels dated. Once she discovers the real him the revelation simultaneously occurs that she's no longer an artist but part of the money-machine... Something like that. I was too distracted by the bad editing and writing. Though, the cinematography was solid. I'll give Autumn Durald kudos for her neon soaked vision of LA.

Mortal Kombat (2021)

The first scene of Mortal Kombat, which was released on YouTube days before the film, is a strong and convincing scene that promises a better rendition of Mortal Kombat. Sadly, this is the best scene in the film. There's a 40 minute lull in the middle of the film with bad editing, terrible acting, and barely any action.  This is a shame because the action is mostly glorious and gory. The staple of Mortal Kombat's franchise. The only actor I really enjoyed watching was Josh Lawson as Kano. Unfortunately, his character isn't the spotlight. The film's player created character Cole Young (Lewis Tan) is awful, along with a few of the other chosen ones. The chosen ones are those born with a special tattoo that signifies their inner strength. If you kill a chosen one you steal the mark. This is an awesome premise and at first it's an exciting start to the film. But when the actors, who can't act, open their mouths for several scenes straight without any action... I was only wondering when this movie would end. Considering I'd just seen the Demon Slayer movie the same day as this, I was really impressed with how boring Mortal Kombat became. Who's in charge of these movies? We can only hope that the Last of Us HBO show changes the game for video game films because this didn't do it. Not even close.

The Little Things (2021)

The Little Things has the shell of a fantastic detective thriller; a remarkable cast, a capable director, and a decent trailer. It doesn't get any better than that, unfortunately. An hour into this film and nothing remarkable happens. It takes its time creeping to a sluggish climax where everything feels sort of meaningless. I found little enjoyment here and it's dark material only serves to unsettle your stomach. Denzel did his best but I think he understood this script was nothing special. Same goes for Rami. Jared Leto took it above and beyond and is remarkably good. Too bad he's only in the last quarter of the movie.
