"Will God forgive us for what we're doing to his creation?" First Reformed is an important movie to me. I grew up a Pastors Kid in NYC. Taking place in NY, First Reformed's Abundant Life is vividly real to me. I've seen this exact church countless times. First Reformed takes relentless shots at big business disguised as church. It paints a beautifully tripped out portrait of a nation that has focused all its resources on making profit- going as far as criticizing modern Christianity. This aesthetically captivating film featuring a minimal soundtrack and Ethan Hawk's best performance is powerful and worthy of being called a modern classic. Paul Schrader is a master of his craft. My favorite script of the year, yet.
