![]() Director Luca Guadagnino's version of Dario Argento's classic horror film Suspiria is an intoxicating experience that is not perfect but harrowing and worthwhile. I rewatched this the day after my first viewing, which was originally interrupted by my anxiety created by this genuinely disturbing screenplay. Luca's direction is immersive and the camera-work groundbreaking. I also appreciated it's accuracy as a time-piece, which created a nerving sense of realism. The plot is full of depth, where the original lacked but made up for in it's cinematography. It's hard to call this a remake because it goes much further with the plot than its predecessor. Dakota Johnson was a perfect choice for her role but Tilda Swinton takes the gold with her three separate and equally exciting performances. This is relentless cinema. Watching Luca's vision play out uninterrupted produces an experience that's not always satisfying but when it is - it's impossible to take your eyes off the screen, even when what you're watching is horrifying.

![]() As Stanley Kubrick is the master of picture- Damien Chazelle is the master of sound. With this power, Chazelle has repeatedly characterized protagonists being punished for their passion. First Man provides a new perspective through the eyes of Neil Armstrong, performed incredibly by Ryan Gosling. This film is about endurance and tension. The brutal reality of achieving a goal out of this world. ![]() As the credits rolled, sniffling was the most audible sound in the theater. A Star is Born is hands-down Cooper's most ambitious and successful work on screen- succeeding as both a lead actor and director. Most notably though, Lady Gaga's performance is legendary. Thirty minutes into the movie I was already sold and on-board with this star-studded cast singing through a beautifully raw script bound to make any viewer feel the weight of it's message. 2018's best cry just got updated. ![]() "Will God forgive us for what we're doing to his creation?" First Reformed is an important movie to me. I grew up a Pastors Kid in NYC. Taking place in NY, First Reformed's Abundant Life is vividly real to me. I've seen this exact church countless times. First Reformed takes relentless shots at big business disguised as church. It paints a beautifully tripped out portrait of a nation that has focused all its resources on making profit- going as far as criticizing modern Christianity. This aesthetically captivating film featuring a minimal soundtrack and Ethan Hawk's best performance is powerful and worthy of being called a modern classic. Paul Schrader is a master of his craft. My favorite script of the year, yet. ![]() Joaquin Phoenix creates a deeply troubled character- with only glimpses of backstory- convincingly enough to hold the weight of a lean script cut to dreamlike sequences. You Were Never Really Here demands multiple viewings and its ninety minute run-time allows for it. Accompanied by a captivating soundtrack and stunning cinematography, Lynne Ramsay has created a compelling crime drama that hits both an emotional climax and resonates a poignant introspective message that is leaving most lost in thought. Beautiful filmmaking exposing dark truths. ![]() "The greatest thing that we can do is to help somebody know that they're loved and capable of loving." Won't You Be My Neighbor? is the beautiful portrait of a television show that captured the heart and mind of a generation. Mr.Roger's personality is unseen in today's television and it is inspiring to be inside of his world for almost two hours, which go by wildly fast. This is a phenomenal documentary peacefully balancing heavy substance with delicate emotions much like Mr. Rogers does in his show. Watching this film is meditating on who is likely the most kind and genuinely good person to ever be on television. Take a trip back in time and indulge in this picture perfect documentary. ![]() "Whatever happened... to man's best friend?" Isle of Dogs is hands down the best stop-motion ever made. If there's something better out there I am unaware. Wes Anderson has crafted another perfect movie. The talent exhibited is seen throughout every aspect. There's a laugh in each scene. The comedy is so well-timed that even the littlest quirk can be gut-wrenching. Surprisingly, the script works wonders on an emotional level. The cast did a phenomenal job. The running-time flew by and I would have not mined an extra thirty minutes. The detail in all things- its just perfect. A must watch. |
