20th Century Women (2016)

"Wondering if you're happy is a great shortcut to just being depressed."

At the heart of this indie film about a dysfunctional household in the late 70's is it's beautiful characters. Each one of them perfectly flawed and different. Their attitudes changing like the wind. There's not much structure to this story and it has a lot to say, as it bounces from character to character, scene by scene.  It's free flowing script replicating the disorderliness of life itself. I enjoyed every perspective and each performance is powerful in it's own right. I was never sure where the film was headed and that's why it's so damn good. In the end you're left with a bittersweet goodbye. Wishing you'd have more time with it's colorful band of misfits.

Tied with Don't Breath for 2016's (2nd) best horror film. This is one of those rare cases where a horror sequel is even better than its predecessor. The Conjuring 2 is scary, demented, and twisted. Its fucking hard to watch at times. Darkness is mastered by these filmmakers and while majority of their productions are "great value," every once in awhile they'll release a film like this- this is a film horror fans want to see on the big screen.

"Once you see that shit, it'll fuck you up for life. Good luck! Have fun!"

Stupidity has never been so fucking smart.
A film about way more than an orgy of food.
Beware.

" I feel so tempted. I feel so tempted to despair. I'm afraid. The weight of your silence is terrible. I pray, but I'm lost. Or am I just praying to nothing? Nothing. Because you are not there."

Silence is powerful and slow-burning art. Scorsese's work will not be denied. Even though this isn't my favorite from him it's continued to solidify Scorsese as one of the greatest directors of this time. Silence doesn't stand to astonish in one watch. It's the type of film you see, respect, and then forget about until one day you're reminded of it's moving story of endurance and love. My mind has matured along with this film and I've come to see it as special.

"You know, ever since we were little, I would get this feeling like... Like I'm floating outside of my body, looking down at myself... And I hate what I see..."

The Edge of Seventeen is 2016s best coming-of-age genre. Its bittersweet. I've always been a big fan of the genre. Heathers, Perks of Being a Wallflower, Breakfast Club- these are some of my all-time favorites. I am happy to say that this title will go down as "just as good as the classics."

"The broken are more evolved."

M. Night is back! Split is a very successful psychological thriller with an in depth script thatll have M. Night fans peeing themselves. James McAvoy's performance is hands down incredible. For the first time in awhile I'm excited for what M. Night will release next.

Patriots Day is a phenomenal tribute to the people and police department of Boston Strong. Peter Burg's finest film and Mark Wahlberg's strongest performance combine to create an emotionally satisfying and heartfelt tribute to those who were hurt that tragic day.

"People love what other people are passionate about."

I've always had a man crush on Ryan Gosling ever since Drive. With La La Land's success its clear he can be more than the silent white knight or lovable hunk. La La Land holds a special place in 2016's film. It's a beautiful take on Hollywood's antique musicals featuring dazzling chemistry and performances from its two leads. The camera work is just incredible and the vibrancy of the music and it's cast really push this musical to incredible heights.

Mel Gibson's return to cinema is a hands down brutal war film about sacrifice. Ambitious enough to be in the same lane as Saving Private Ryan but it doesn't quite reach those heights. Boasting great cinematography, the choreographed war sequences brought tears to my eyes. While the narrative lacked in some areas, the best moments of this film are some of the best scenes in 2016. Also, incredible  strong performances from Hugo Weaving, Vince Vaughn, and Andrew Garfield!
