"We did not kill Jesus! We did not do that!"
The Night Before is about what Christmas really stands for; getting messed up with your friends, eating shrooms, and Miley Cyrus. This movie is a big laugh and a good bet for any late night around the holidays. Solid performances and a great balance between comedy and character really proves that The Night Before won't easily be forgotten.

Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl (2015)

Here is an unconventional coming-of-age flick about two "coworkers" that make homemade movies, who become friends with a girl that has just been diagnosed with leukemia. There's a lot to love about this movie. The homemade renditions of classics, Jon Bernthal as a tatted out history teacher, and the bittersweet moments of youth. It will make you laugh, make you cry, and make you long for the memories you may or may not have made in High-school.

Krisha (2015)

An eerie discomfort presents itself in the opening shot and continues on through the thankfully short run-time of this family-style horror. This is Trey Edward Shults directorial debut. I was lucky to watch (and love) It Comes At Night so I was interested in seeing what else he can do. The man has talent. He has created two low-budget films that are way creepier than any of the big studios horror films because they have depth and complexity. Concepts that mainstream horror tend to leave to the side for a few extra jump scares. Krisha is not an enjoyable watch. I couldn't wait for it to end. But the feeling that the movie created was pressing and powerful. Keep an eye out for Trey Edward Shults.

"We got two stories here: a story about degenerate clergy, and a story about a bunch of lawyers turning child abuse into a cottage industry. Which story do you want us to write? Because we're writing one of them."

Spotlight puts the catholic church on a full and uncompromising big budget blast. It's a rasengan to the face of the church. This is an in-depth  and realistically tear jerking drama with a perfect cast and great timing. Perfect job.

The Hateful Eight (2015)

"You believe in Jesus now, huh, bitch? Good. Cause you bout to meet him!"
I saw The Hateful Eight during the 70mm Roadshow event featuring the extended film including an overture and an intermission. Even without these enjoyable kinks though, this Tarantino cult masterpiece proceeds like a play. The set is limited, its very long, and it's mostly dialogue based (before the classic Tarantino blood bath commences, of course).  Considering it's written by Tarantino what else do you want? All these aspects are perfect and very enjoyable, for the right viewer. If you want to die watching About Time or Emma you may disagree with the five star rating. However, if you actually appreciate the art of cinema then c'mon down! Tarantino is one of the best writers of this time. This may just be his masterpiece.

"Once upon a time, before I came, you cried and cried and watched TV all day, until you were a zombie. But then I zoomed down from heaven, through skylight, into Room. Whoosh-pshew! And I was kicking you from the inside. Boom, boom! And then I shot out onto Rug with my eyes wide open, and you cutt-ed the cord and said, "Hello, Jack!"
ROOM tells so many stories. A desperate mother's fight for survival, a fight for the rights of a mother, and a boy small boy who's never seen the world. While the first half may take the cake, the experience as a whole speaks volumes on love.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

"Chewy, we're home."
The Star Wars of my generation.
Much like the above quote from the film Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this episode- in the most beloved franchise of all time - is glowing with nostalgia that will have tears flowing. As the light-saber was guided into Rey's hand, the classic music cued (every fans eyes watered) and the modern face of Star Wars realized that she contained a power to be reckoned with. JJ Abrams has just created a Star Wars for this generation. A Star Wars that both breaths the same air of a world we fell in-love with and creating new exciting characters and conflicts. There were moments I wanted the movie to pause so I could sit in the world longer. Happy to say we got a solid reboot. Entertaining installment in the most legendary saga of all-time.

"Steve Wozniak: What do you do? You're not an engineer. You're not a designer. You can't put a hammer to a nail. I built the circuit board! The graphical interface was stolen! So how come ten times in a day I read Steve Jobs is a genius? What do you do?
Steve Jobs: Musicians play their instruments. I play the orchestra."

Steve Jobs is a significant and complex look at a genius, who is unlikeable like most of them are.  It's a completely honest look at the entrepreneur who changed technology forever. Michael Fassbender does a fantastic job bringing Jobs to life with Sorkin's neat script.

Denis Villeneuve directs Sicario as if he was simply following the characters through their horrific stories. This movie is raw. Beware to viewers- you're about to see some shit. No restriction is made in this realistic portrait of the war on drugs in Mexico.

The End of the Tour (2015)

"I'm not saying watching t.v. is bad, or a waste of your time anymore than - like - masturbation is bad or a waste of your time; it's pleasant little way to spend a few minutes - but if you're doing it 20 times day; if your primary sexual relationship is with your hand - something is wrong..."

The End of the Tour features a ridiculously fun power-duo with Jesse Eisenberg and Jason Segel carrying the weight of this profound script with emotional significance. I'd recommend this movie to anybody.  It's got so much to say. We all need to watch this.
